The journey

Discover Lake Biwa beyond the standard route.

Lake Biwa is Japan's largest lake, but this journey is about much more than completing a circuit of its shoreline.

Starting and finishing at Maibara Station, the route connects lakeside scenery with historic towns, forests, river valleys, farming communities, and the local food culture of northern and eastern Shiga.

The goal is not to race around the lake. Each day leaves space for meals, historical stops, photography, local experiences, and time away from the bicycle.

Route overview

Five connected days across northern and eastern Shiga.

The route starts and finishes at Maibara Station, with two nights in Kinomoto and two nights in the Hikone area.

Day 1

Welcome to Shiga

Maibara → Nagahama → Kinomoto
40 km · 150 m climbing
Cycling through the countryside of Shiga Prefecture

Meet your Morikai guides at the East Exit of Maibara Station at 9:00. After introductions and bicycle fitting, the journey begins with a scenic ride north along the eastern side of Lake Biwa.

We stop near Nagahama Castle to explore the lakeside grounds before sitting down for a traditional soba lunch. From Nagahama, the route turns toward the Yogo River and continues through rural communities to Kinomoto.

Kinomoto developed as a historic post town and remains known for its traditional streets and local sake breweries. After settling into the ryokan, we gather for dinner and the first toast of the journey.

Day 2

Yogo Lake and Kinomoto

Kinomoto → Yogo Lake Loop → Kinomoto
40 km · 250 m climbing
Lake and mountain landscape in northern Shiga

After breakfast at the ryokan, we follow the Yogo River north toward Yogo Lake, a peaceful mountain lake surrounded by forest.

On calm days, the still water creates the mirror-like reflection that has inspired local legends. Depending on the weather and the group’s preference, there may also be an opportunity to climb or walk toward Mount Shizugatake for views of both Yogo Lake and Lake Biwa.

After lunch overlooking the lake, we spend the afternoon exploring the quiet roads and communities around northern Shiga. Back in Kinomoto, the day concludes with a sake tasting at a local brewery before dinner at the ryokan.

Day 3

River Valleys to Hikone

Kinomoto → Kusano River → Ane River → Hikone
60 km · 200 m climbing
Rural road through the Shiga countryside

Leaving Kinomoto, the route turns inland and follows quiet roads through river valleys, farmland, forests, and traditional settlements.

We trace sections of the Kusano and Ane river systems, experiencing a side of Shiga that feels far removed from the busy sightseeing routes of nearby Kyoto.

By late afternoon, we arrive near Hikone and check into our second ryokan, which will be our base for the final two nights. Hikone Castle and its surrounding historic district are within easy reach for an evening walk.

Day 4

Lake Biwa and Chōmeiji

Hikone → Nishinoko → Chōmeiji → Hikone
65 km · 200 m climbing
Scenery near Lake Biwa in Shiga Prefecture

Today’s route follows local roads and waterways south from Hikone toward Nishinoko, a wetland area and former inlet of Lake Biwa near Ōmihachiman.

We reconnect with Lake Biwa near Chōmeiji, where the road rolls through wooded hills with the lake appearing between the trees. Lunch is planned at a relaxed location on the eastern shore.

The journey then turns north, following Lake Biwa back toward Hikone and the Seri River. This is the longest day of the tour, but the terrain remains manageable and the route can be adjusted when necessary.

Day 5

Taga and the Return to Maibara

Hikone → Taga → Maibara
30 km · 250 m climbing
Cycling route near Lake Biwa

The final day begins by following the Seri River east toward the mountain town of Taga.

After passing through town, the route climbs gradually through a wooded valley before turning back toward Maibara. The shorter distance allows us to enjoy the final roads without rushing.

Near Maibara Station, we return the bicycles and gather for lunch and coffee at a local bakery. It is a final opportunity to recount the highlights of the week before collecting your luggage and continuing onward through Japan.
